A Note on the City
The city is small enough to know in a long weekend and serious enough to keep returning to. Niederdorf for the morning, the lake for the afternoon, and the long evening between Kronenhalle and the Dolder that Zurich has quietly made its own.
What follows is a short, edited guide — four daytime moments, then two of each for the evening. Enough for a long weekend, or the start of something worth returning for.

Old Town · Cobbled lanes & guild houses
The medieval old town on the right bank of the Limmat — cobbled lanes, painted shop signs, the Grossmünster towers above. A coffee at one of the Niederdorf cafés, a slow walk down to the river. Stay until the morning has settled.

Paradeplatz · The boulevard of boutiques
The mile-long boulevard from the station to the lake — plane trees, polished granite, the great Swiss watchmakers and couturiers. Walk it slowly, stop at Sprüngli on Paradeplatz for the Luxemburgerli. The city's quietest exhibition of itself.

Heimplatz · Modern masters, in the new wing
Switzerland's great modern collection in David Chipperfield's new extension — the Bührle bequest, the Giacometti rooms, the Munch holdings. Allow two hours; you will want three. The café at the top is the appointment.

By Bürkliplatz · The lake at golden hour
The ZSG steamer from Bürkliplatz — a slow loop south along the Goldküste, the Alps on a clear afternoon, the city receding behind. An hour, a coffee on the upper deck, the lake at its best.

The Dolder Grand · Two Michelin stars on the hill
Heiko Nieder's two-starred dining room at The Dolder Grand — refined, modern, and the kind of long tasting that earns its hours. Above the city on the Adlisberg, with the lake spread out below at dusk.
Best for · A long, considered tasting
Rämistrasse · The Zurich institution
Hulda Zumsteg's brasserie since 1924 — the Picasso, the Chagall, the Miró all original on the dark-panelled walls. Wiener Schnitzel, Tournedos Helder, the dessert trolley wheeled to the table. The room Zurich measures every other room against.

Schwanengasse · The whisky speakeasy
The whisky room behind the unmarked door on Schwanengasse — intimate, dim, dark wood, and a back-bar of single malts that earns its reputation. Ask the bartender; let him pour. The room for the second round.

Gartenstrasse · Brasserie elegance, downtown
The brasserie-and-bar on Gartenstrasse — green leather banquettes, brass fittings, marble bar, and a long aperitivo hour. The room for the considered first drink before dinner, or the long second hour after.

Langstrasse · The institution, after midnight
The basement room on Langstrasse that has held the late hour for two decades — warm orange and red lighting, a mirrored disco ball, and a crowd that comes for the music, not the door. The room for the long, unstuffy close.

Geroldstrasse · Techno, kept serious
The Geroldstrasse room with the international booking calendar — minimal, dark, a sound system that earns its place, and a programming policy that takes the music seriously. The room for the late, intentional night.

V · Hotels
A good hotel does the quiet work — a smile at the door, a key already cut, a view that earns its place in the morning. These two do it best in Zurich.
Kurhausstrasse · The grand hotel on the hill
The turreted nineteenth-century grand hotel on the Adlisberg, restored by Norman Foster — the city below, the lake beyond, the Alps on a clear day. The Spa is the appointment; The Restaurant is the dinner. The grandest address in the city.
Best for · A grand, restorative weekend
Talstrasse · The grande dame of the lake
Family-owned since 1844 — the private park, the fountain in the courtyard, the Pavillon for the long lunch and Bar au Lac for the long evening. A service so practised it has become invisible. The Zurich classic, kept exactly.
Best for · A grand, central weekend

Not a schedule — a suggestion. Move with the light, the lake, and the company you keep.

Start at one of the old town's quieter rooms — a coffee, a slow walk along the Limmat. The day asks for nothing yet.

Down the boulevard to Paradeplatz, a Luxemburgerli at Sprüngli, the windows along the way. Stay until the morning has settled.

A long lunch at one of the quieter rooms on the Bürkliplatz side. Stay for the second coffee; the afternoon is in no hurry.

A ZSG steamer from Bürkliplatz, a coffee on the upper deck, the Alps on the horizon. Stay until the light turns the city gold.
19:00
George for the brasserie hour, Old Crow for the considered second round. One round, slowly. Let the dining room wait.
21:00
The Restaurant at the Dolder for the long tasting, Kronenhalle for the grand classical evening. Both deserve the early reservation.
