Cannes, in Croisette light and Riviera quiet.

A considered guide to the grande dame of the Côte d'Azur — the Croisette at first light, an afternoon to the Lérins, and the long European evening between Harry's Bar, La Palme d'Or and a suite at the Martinez that Cannes has quietly kept its own.

Croisette · Le Suquet · Lérins

A grande dame of the Riviera that keeps her hours in palm light, white stucco and sea air.

A Note on the Town

Cannes rewards those who keep close to the Croisette.

The town is small, horizontal and quietly grand — the Croisette curving along the bay, Le Suquet rising above the old port, the Lérins a short crossing offshore, and the long European evening between Harry's Bar and La Palme d'Or that Cannes has quietly kept to itself for generations.

What follows is a short, edited guide — four daytime moments, then two of each for the evening. Enough for a long weekend, or the start of something worth returning for.

VI · A Sketched Itinerary

One day, lightly drawn.

Not a schedule — a suggestion. Move with the light, the bay, and the company you keep.

  1. 10:00

    Coffee on the Croisette

Start at one of the marble-countered cafés along the Croisette — an espresso, a slow watch of the palms and the bay. The day asks for nothing yet.

  2. 12:00

A long lunch in Le Suquet

Up to the old town for a considered lunch — a plate of Niçoise, a glass of Côtes de Provence rosé, an hour at a quiet table beneath the church tower.

  3. 16:00

    The Lérins & the port

An afternoon across to Sainte-Marguerite for the pines and the long view, then back along the Vieux Port as the lamps come on.

  4. 18:30

An aperitivo at Le Bar à Vin

An hour in the intimate wine room — a glass of Bandol in hand, dark wood and candlelight around. The European hour, slowly, exactly as Cannes keeps it.

  5. 20:30

    Dinner

La Palme d'Or for the considered Art Deco evening, or a long second sitting at La Table de Patrick Raingeard for the sea-view close. Both deserve the early reservation.

  6. 23:30

    If the night insists

Harry's Bar at the Carlton for one last cocktail with the room, then — if the night truly insists — Baôli for the long beach-club close or Gotha Club for the upscale one. The Croisette will keep.

A Closing Thought

"In Cannes the evening is unhurried, the company chosen, and the town is at its best for those who keep close to the Croisette."
