Düsseldorf, in lamplight and Rhine air.

A considered guide to the city — Königsallee mornings under the chestnut trees, an afternoon between the Hofgarten and Gehry's silver harbour, and the long Rhine evening between Nagaya and the Beuys Bar that the city has quietly made its own.

A Note on the City

Düsseldorf rewards those who keep the slower hours.

The city is small enough to know in a long weekend and serious enough to keep returning to. The Kö for the morning, the Rhine for the afternoon, and the long evening between Nagaya and Im Schiffchen that Düsseldorf has quietly made its own.

What follows is a short, edited guide — four daytime moments, then two of each for the evening. Enough for a long weekend, or the start of something worth returning for.

VI · A Sketched Itinerary

One day, lightly drawn.

Not a schedule — a suggestion. Move with the light, the river, and the company you keep.

  1. 10:00

    Coffee on the Kö

Start at one of the quieter rooms on the Königsallee — a coffee, a slow walk along the canal under the chestnut trees. The day asks for nothing yet.

  2. 12:00

    An hour in the MedienHafen

Across to Gehry's silver curves at the harbour — an hour at one of the rooms with a view of the water. Two hours, slowly.

  3. 16:00

    Golden hour on the Rhine

Down to the Rheinuferpromenade for the curved walk along the river. Back to the hotel for the slow change before the evening turns.

  4. 18:30

    Vermouth at The View

An hour at the rooftop of the Hyatt Regency — the city skyline, a martini in hand. Stay until the lamps come on across the harbour.

  5. 20:30

    Dinner

Nagaya for the considered Japanese tasting, Im Schiffchen for the grand classical French evening. Both deserve the early reservation.

  6. 23:30

    If the night insists

Beuys Bar for the classical second round, then — if the night truly insists — Nachtresidenz for the long, intentional close. The city will keep.

A Closing Thought

"In Düsseldorf the evening is unhurried, the company chosen, and the city is at its best for those who keep to the slower hours."
