Paris, in Haussmannian light and Seine quiet.

A considered guide to the most storied capital of them all — the Seine at first light, an afternoon in the Luxembourg, and the long Parisian evening between Bar Hemingway, Plénitude and a suite at the Plaza Athénée that the city has quietly kept its own.

Seine · Vendôme · Saint-Germain

A capital that keeps her hours in zinc rooflight, plane shadow and lamplight.

A Note on the City

Paris rewards those who keep close to the river.

The city is horizontal, walkable and quietly grand — the Seine at the heart of it, Saint-Germain on one bank and the Marais on the other, Place Vendôme above and the Jardin du Luxembourg below. The long Parisian evening between the Ritz and Le Meurice is an inheritance the city has kept for two centuries.

What follows is a short, edited guide — four daytime moments, then two of each for the evening. Enough for a long weekend, or the start of something worth returning for.

VI · A Sketched Itinerary

One day, lightly drawn.

Not a schedule — a suggestion. Move with the light, the river, and the company you keep.

  1. 10:00

    Coffee on the quai

Start at one of the marble-countered cafés along the Seine — an espresso, a slow watch of the bateaux and the bouquinistes. The day asks for nothing yet.

  2. 12:30

    A long lunch in Saint-Germain

Down to Saint-Germain for a considered lunch — a plate at a corner bistro, a glass of Sancerre, an hour at a quiet table beneath plane trees.

  3. 16:00

    The Luxembourg & the Seine

An afternoon in the Jardin du Luxembourg, then back along the river by Place Vendôme as the lamps come on.

  4. 18:30

An aperitif at Little Red Door

An hour in the intimate Marais cocktail room — a refined first round in hand, deep red lacquer and candlelight around. The European hour, slowly.

  5. 20:30

    Dinner

Plénitude for the considered evening above the Seine, or a long second sitting at Le Comptoir du Relais for the classic bistro close. Both deserve the early reservation.

  6. 23:30

    If the night insists

Bar Hemingway at the Ritz for one last cocktail with the room, then — if the night truly insists — Rex Club for the considered underground close or L'Arc for the upscale one. The city will keep.

A Closing Thought

"In Paris the evening is unhurried, the company chosen, and the city is at its best for those who keep close to the river."
