Liechtenstein, in alpine light and Princely quiet.

A considered guide to the principality on the Rhine — the Städtle at first light, an hour in the Princely vineyards, the Castle on its cliff, and the long European evening between Brasserie Burg, Restaurant Torkel and a suite at the Park Hotel Sonnenhof that Liechtenstein has quietly kept its own.

Vaduz · Hofkellerei · Malbun

A principality that keeps its hours in alpine light, Pinot and Princely quiet.

A Note on the Principality

Liechtenstein rewards those who keep close to the Rhine.

The principality is small, vertical and quietly grand — the Städtle at the centre, the Princely Hofkellerei vineyards on the slope above, the Castle on its cliff and the alpine village of Malbun a short drive up the mountain. The long European evening between Brasserie Burg and Restaurant Torkel has been quietly kept by Liechtenstein for generations.

What follows is a short, edited guide — four daytime moments, then two of each for the evening. Enough for a long weekend, or the start of something worth returning for.

VI · A Sketched Itinerary

One day, lightly drawn.

Not a schedule — a suggestion. Move with the light, the Rhine, and the company you keep.

  1. 10:00

    Coffee on the Städtle

Start at one of the cafés on the Städtle — an espresso, a slow watch of the palms, the contemporary sculptures and the Castle on the cliff. The day asks for nothing yet.

  2. 12:00

A long lunch in the vineyards

Up to the Hofkellerei for a considered lunch on the Torkel terrace — a glass of Liechtensteiner Pinot, an hour at a quiet table among the vines.

  3. 15:00

    The Castle & Malbun

An afternoon up to the Castle for the long view, then — if the day allows — a short drive to the alpine village of Malbun for the high afternoon.

  4. 18:30

    An aperitivo at Brasserie Burg

An hour at the classical bar — a Manhattan in hand, mahogany and brass around. The European hour, slowly, exactly as the principality keeps it.

  5. 20:30

    Dinner

Restaurant Torkel for the considered evening among the vines, or a long second sitting at Marée for the modern close. Both deserve the early reservation.

  6. 23:30

    If the night insists

K5 Lounge for one last drink with the alpine view, then — if the night truly insists — Camäleon Club for the upscale close or Tangente for the long, slow late hour. The mountains will keep.

A Closing Thought

"In Liechtenstein the evening is unhurried, the company chosen, and the principality is at its best for those who keep close to the Rhine."
