Genève, between the lake and the mountain.

A considered guide to the city — quiet old town mornings, Mont Blanc on the horizon at dusk, and the long, discreet evening that Geneva does so quietly well.

A Note on the City

Geneva rewards those who keep their counsel.

The city is small enough to know in a long weekend and serious enough to keep returning to. The old town for the morning, the lake for the afternoon, and the long evening on the right bank that Geneva has quietly made its own.

What follows is a short, edited guide — four daytime moments, then two of each for the evening. Enough for a long weekend, or the start of something worth returning for.

By Day

Mont Blanc, in the distance. The lake, at hand.

By Day · Stone & Lake

Before the lights come on.

Four ways to spend the bright hours — old town, park, archive, lake. Each quietly worth the day on its own.

Vieille-Ville

Old Town · Saint-Pierre & the cobbled hill

An hour on the lake

L'Atelier Robuchon

The Woodward · Counter dining, Robuchon's last word

If the night insists.

The Baroque Club Geneva opulent private members nightclub interior with deep red velvet banquettes, baroque gilded mirrors, crystal chandeliers and low candlelight

The Baroque Club

Java Club Geneva sleek modern nightclub interior with dramatic blue and purple lighting, mirrored ceilings and a stylish silhouetted crowd dancing

Best for · A late, intimate close

V · Hotels

A room worth returning to.

A good hotel does the quiet work — a smile at the door, a key already cut, a view that earns its place in the morning. These two do it best in Geneva.

The View
The Jet d'Eau at dusk, Mont Blanc at first light.
The Detail
A martini brought up before you ask for it.
The Hour
Late check-out, granted with a nod.
The Morning
Coffee on the terrace, the lake just waking.

Four Seasons Hôtel des Bergues

Quai des Bergues · The grande dame of the Rhône

Geneva's oldest grand hotel — neoclassical, on the right bank of the Rhône, with the Jet d'Eau in the window and a service so practised it has become invisible. The benchmark every other Geneva hotel measures itself against.

Best for · A grand, central weekend

The Woodward

Quai Wilson · Mandarin's all-suite address

Best for · A still, all-suite weekend

VI · A Sketched Itinerary

One day, lightly drawn.

Not a schedule — a suggestion. Move with the light, the lake, and the company you keep.

  1. 09:00

    Coffee on Place du Bourg-de-Four

Start at one of the old town's quieter squares — a coffee, a slow climb up to Saint-Pierre. The day asks for nothing yet.

  2. 10:30

An hour in the old town

From Saint-Pierre down through the antiquaires and back to Parc des Bastions. Stay until the morning has settled.

  3. 13:00

    Lunch on the right bank

A long lunch at one of the quieter rooms on the Quai des Bergues. Stay for the second coffee; the afternoon is in no hurry.

  4. 16:00

    An hour on the lake

A CGN steamer from the Quai du Mont-Blanc, a coffee on the upper deck, the lake at its best. Stay until the light turns the city gold.

  5. 19:00

    Sundowner at the MET

Twelve floors up at the MET Rooftop, the Jet d'Eau below and Mont Blanc on the horizon. One round, slowly. Let the dining room wait.

  6. 20:30

    Dinner

L'Atelier Robuchon for the considered counter evening, Il Lago for the grand classical dining room. Both deserve the early reservation.

A Closing Thought

"In Geneva the evening is held quietly. The city expects nothing of you but discretion."
