Carlsbad, in colonnade light and Bohemian quiet.

A considered guide to the white spa town in the Bohemian hills — the Mill Colonnade at first light, an afternoon up to Diana, and the long European evening between Becher's Bar, Grandrestaurant Pupp and a suite at the Pupp that Carlsbad has quietly kept its own.

An elegant couple in evening attire walking through the colonnade of Karlovy Vary at golden hour with white pastel-painted neoclassical spa buildings, ornate cast-iron arches above and steam from the thermal springs

Colonnade · Diana · Stará Louka

A small spa town that keeps its hours in white stucco, sandstone and steam.

A Note on the Town

Carlsbad rewards those who keep close to the river.

The town is small, vertical and quietly grand — the Teplá river through the centre, the white colonnades along its banks, the forested Bohemian hills folding around, and the long European evening between Becher's Bar and Grandrestaurant Pupp that Carlsbad has quietly kept to itself.

What follows is a short, edited guide — four daytime moments, then two of each for the evening. Enough for a long weekend, or the start of something worth returning for.

V · Hotels

A room worth returning to.

A good hotel does the quiet work — a smile at the door, a key already cut, a view that earns its place in the morning. These two do it best in Carlsbad.

The Detail

VI · A Sketched Itinerary

One day, lightly drawn.

Not a schedule — a suggestion. Move with the light, the colonnade, and the company you keep.

  1. 10:00

    Coffee in the colonnade

Start at one of the marble-countered cafés along the Mill Colonnade — an espresso, a slow watch of the white columns and the river. The day asks for nothing yet.

  2. 12:00

A lunch in the Old Town

A long, considered lunch in the white-stuccoed quarter — a plate of game, a glass of Moravian white, and an hour at a quiet table by the window before the funicular.

  3. 16:00

    Diana & the colonnades

An afternoon up to Diana for the long view, then back down through the Mill Colonnade and the Vřídlo geyser hall — the white spa town slowly turning towards the evening.

  4. 18:30

    An aperitivo at Becher's Bar

An hour in the classical bar at the Pupp — a Becherovka or a Manhattan in hand, dark wood and brass around. The European hour, slowly, exactly as Carlsbad keeps it.

  5. 20:30

    Dinner

Grandrestaurant Pupp for the considered classical evening, or a long second sitting at Restaurace Promenáda for the intimate close. Both deserve the early reservation.

  6. 23:30

    If the night insists

Sky Bar at the Hotel Thermal for one last drink with the spa town lit, then — if the night truly insists — Klub Imperial for the upscale close or Barracuda Music Bar for the long one. The colonnade will keep.

A Closing Thought

"In Carlsbad the evening is unhurried, the company chosen, and the town is at its best for those who keep close to the river."
