Baden-Baden, in lamplight and forest air.

A considered guide to the town — Lichtentaler Allee mornings on the Oos, an afternoon between the thermal baths and the Black Forest, and the long Belle Époque evening between The Grill and Brenners that the spa town has quietly made its own.

A Note on the Town

Baden-Baden rewards those who keep the slower hours.

The town is small enough to know in a long weekend and serious enough to keep returning to. The Allee for the morning, the baths for the afternoon, and the long evening between The Grill and Brenners that Baden-Baden has quietly made its own.

What follows is a short, edited guide — four daytime moments, then two of each for the evening. Enough for a long weekend, or the start of something worth returning for.

VI · A Sketched Itinerary

One day, lightly drawn.

Not a schedule — a suggestion. Move with the light, the forest, and the company you keep.

  1. 10:00

    Coffee on the Allee

Start at one of the quieter rooms on the Lichtentaler Allee — a coffee, a slow walk along the Oos. The day asks for nothing yet.

  2. 12:00

    An hour at Friedrichsbad

Across to the Roman-Irish baths for the long seventeen-stage ritual. Three hours, slowly. The morning, kept entirely to itself.

  3. 16:00

An hour in the Black Forest

Up to the Merkur for an hour in the pine and beech. Back to the hotel for the slow change before the evening turns.

  4. 18:30

    Vermouth at the Kurhaus

An hour at the Kurhaus salon — the columned facade, the Florentine rooms. Stay until the lamps come on.

  5. 20:30

    Dinner

The Grill at Brenners for the classical evening, Maltes Hidden Kitchen for the intimate tasting. Both deserve the early reservation.

  6. 23:30

    If the night insists

Bernstein for the theatrical first drink, Roomers Bar for the considered second. One round, slowly. The town will keep.

A Closing Thought

"In Baden-Baden the evening is unhurried, the company chosen, and the town is at its best for those who keep to the slower hours."
