DESIRES

Abu Dhabi, in marble light and desert quiet.

A considered guide to the capital of the Emirates — the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at golden hour, an afternoon along the Corniche, the dunes beyond the city, and the long evening between Coya, Ray's and a suite at Emirates Palace that Abu Dhabi has quietly kept its own.

A Note on the Capital

Abu Dhabi rewards those who give the day its proper width.

The capital is large, flat and quietly grand — the Corniche along the Gulf, the Grand Mosque on the inland side, the museums of Saadiyat to the north-east and the marinas of Yas a short drive across the causeway. The long evening between Coya and Ray's has been quietly kept by Abu Dhabi for the last decade.

What follows is a short, edited guide — four daytime moments, then two of each for the evening. Enough for a long weekend, or the start of something worth returning for.

VI · A Sketched Itinerary

One day, lightly drawn.

Not a schedule — a suggestion. Move with the light, the Gulf, and the company you keep.

  1. 10:00

    Coffee on the Corniche

Start at a quiet café along the Corniche — an espresso or a karak, a slow watch of the Gulf. The day asks for nothing yet.

  2. 12:30

An hour at the Grand Mosque

A long, slow circuit of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — the white marble, the courtyards, the desert light softening as the hour turns.

  3. 15:30

    Saadiyat & the Louvre

An afternoon at the Louvre Abu Dhabi for the silver dome, then a short turn across to Saadiyat Beach for the white sand and the Gulf.

  4. 18:30

    An aperitivo at Ray's

An hour at the panoramic bar — a martini in hand, the city glittering below, the desert horizon turning blue. The capital's most cinematic first round.

  5. 20:30

    Dinner

Hakkasan at Emirates Palace for the considered Cantonese evening, or Coya for the vivid Peruvian close. Both deserve the early reservation.

  6. 23:30

    If the night insists

The Library Bar for one last round, then — if the night truly insists — MAD on Yas for the upscale close or Iris for the long, slow rooftop hour. The Corniche will keep.

A Closing Thought

"In Abu Dhabi the evening is unhurried, the company chosen, and the capital is at its best for those who give the day its proper width."
