Zandvoort, in dune light and long beach evenings.

A considered guide to the Dutch coast — open sky over the North Sea, the dunes at golden hour, and an unhurried afternoon between the beachclubs, a sand-side dinner and the slow walk back along the boulevard.

A stylish couple on Zandvoort beach at golden hour with the North Sea behind, dune grass and a low warm sun

Boulevard · Dunes · South Beach

A coastline that does its best work slowly — and is happy to wait for you.

A Note on the Coast

Zandvoort rewards those who arrive without a schedule.

The coast is best taken in long, easy stretches — a walk in the dunes, a slow lunch on the sand, a measured drink as the sun lowers, then a corner table close enough to the surf to hear it between courses.

What follows is a short, edited guide — four daytime moments, then two of each for the evening. Enough for a long weekend by the sea, or for a perfectly composed escape from Amsterdam for the night.

By Day

Sand, dune grass, sky — and the long horizon doing most of the work.

By Day · Dunes & Boulevard

Before the lanterns come on.

Four ways to move through the coast — the dunes, the boulevard at first light, an afternoon by the circuit, and the long stretch of South Beach. Enough structure for the day without pinning it down.

A long walk through the dunes

Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland · Open sky, dune grass

Begin behind the boulevard, in the protected dunes — sand paths, the sound of the wind through the grass, and a horizon that keeps moving as you climb. The most quietly beautiful hour Zandvoort offers.

Best for · A first sense of the coast

The boulevard at first light

Boulevard Barnaart · A coastline waking up

Walk the boulevard early, while the beachclubs are still being set. The light is at its kindest, the cafés are easing open and the long Dutch sky takes care of the rest of the morning for you.

Best for · A soft, coastal start

Circuit Zandvoort viewed from the dunes in soft afternoon light with the iconic banked corner and grandstand against the North Sea sky

An afternoon by the circuit

Circuit Zandvoort · Engineering against the dunes

A different rhythm — the famous circuit set into the dunes, the grandstand silhouettes, the engineered curves seen from a quiet vantage point. Even when nothing is racing, it is one of the most cinematic walks the town quietly hides.

Best for · A more unexpected hour

Zandvoort South Beach in late afternoon with long open sand, scattered beachclub silhouettes and warm golden light over the North Sea

South Beach in the late afternoon

South Beach · A slower stretch of strand

Drift south of the main boulevard — fewer flags, longer stretches of empty sand, the beachclubs spaced more generously. The sort of late afternoon that asks for very little and rewards it well.

Best for · A quiet pre-dinner hour

II · Restaurants

Where the evening begins.

Kaito Beach Zandvoort refined beachfront Japanese restaurant interior with warm wood, soft lighting and a view onto the North Sea at dusk

Kaito Beach

South Beach · The refined Japanese table on the sand

The most considered dinner on the Zandvoort beach — a polished Japanese-led kitchen, a careful sake list, and a long oak table close enough to the surf to hear it between courses. Quiet ambition, beautifully placed.

Best for · A proper, considered dinner

The Spot Beachclub Zandvoort terrace at sunset with white linen tables, candles and a long view across the North Sea

The Spot Beachclub

Boulevard Barnaart · The classic dune-top dinner

A more familiar Zandvoort favorite — generous Mediterranean cooking, lanterns down the terrace and a view that turns gradually from blue to amber as the kitchen finds its rhythm. Coastal, unhurried, well-run.

Best for · An easy, golden-hour dinner

III · Bars

For the hour before, or the hour after.

Bernie's Beach Club Zandvoort beachfront lounge with sand floor, low driftwood tables, lanterns and a stylish crowd at sunset

Bernie's Beach Club

Boulevard · The first-round address on the sand

Still the social heart of the strand — driftwood tables, a careful cocktail list and a crowd that knows the difference between loud and warm. The first drink of the day usually finds its way here.

Best for · The opening round at the beach

ZIZO Lounge Zandvoort beachfront terrace at golden hour with low sofas, lanterns, cocktails and the North Sea horizon

ZIZO Lounge

South Beach · The polished sunset terrace

A slightly more polished room — long sofas, candles down the rail, an aperitivo list that reads better than it has any right to on a beach. The hour to choose if the sun is doing something worth pausing for.

Best for · A measured aperitivo at golden hour

IV · Late Rooms

If the night insists.

Mango's Beach Bar Zandvoort dance floor on the sand at night with warm string lights, a stylish crowd and a DJ booth by the dunes

Mango's Beach Bar

Boulevard · The end-of-day dance on the sand

Where the strand turns into a dance floor — the music edges up gently after sunset, the lanterns come on along the rail, and the evening keeps its feet in the sand for as long as it would like to.

Best for · A barefoot late hour

Ohana Beach Zandvoort intimate beachfront lounge at night with palms, warm amber lighting and a relaxed crowd by the dunes

Ohana Beach

South Beach · The intimate beachside close

A more intimate close — open-air, palm-lit, a careful sound system rather than a loud one. The sort of place that lets the night extend itself without ever quite admitting that is what it is doing.

Best for · A softer, intimate close

V · Hotels

A room with the sea outside.

In Zandvoort, where you stay sets the rhythm. One hotel gives you a clean, contemporary beachfront, the other a classic seaside grandeur. Both open straight onto the boulevard.

The View
Open sky, long sand, the North Sea horizon.
The Detail

The Hour

The Morning

Beachhouse Hotel Zandvoort modern beachfront hotel exterior at dusk with glowing windows and the North Sea horizon

Beachhouse Hotel

Boulevard · The contemporary beachfront stay

Light, modern rooms looking straight onto the North Sea — open sky in the morning, the long horizon at dusk and the boulevard a few quiet steps below. The most direct way to wake into the coast.

Best for · A clean, contemporary beachfront stay

Palace Hotel Zandvoort classic grand seaside hotel exterior at golden hour with elegant historic façade and the North Sea boulevard

Palace Hotel Zandvoort

Boulevard Paulus Loot · The classic seaside grande dame

The town's classic seaside hotel — broader rooms, the older Zandvoort grandeur, and the long walk along the boulevard already laid out below the terrace. A more traditional way to let the coast look after the weekend.

Best for · A more classic, restful weekend

VI · A Sketched Itinerary

One day, lightly drawn.

Not a schedule — a suggestion. Move with the tide, the dunes, and the company you keep.

  1. 10:00

    Coffee and the dunes

Begin behind the boulevard with a coffee, then a slow loop into the dunes while the air is still cool and the paths are quiet.

  2. 13:00

    Lunch on the sand

Drift down to Bernie's or ZIZO for an unhurried lunch — driftwood tables, the sea on the right, no particular hurry to leave.

  3. 16:00

    An hour by the circuit

Walk the dune side of Circuit Zandvoort. The engineering against the wild grass is one of the most underrated views the coast offers.

  4. 19:00

    Aperitivo at golden hour

Back to the boulevard for a measured drink as the sun lowers. ZIZO if you want polish, Bernie's if you want warmth.

  5. 20:30

    Dinner

Kaito for the considered Japanese-led table on the sand, The Spot for a generous Mediterranean evening with the long view across the surf.

  6. 23:00

    If the night extends itself

Mango's for a barefoot late hour on the sand, Ohana for a softer, palm-lit close. The boulevard home is short and well-lit.

A Closing Thought

"Zandvoort is at its best when nothing is rushed — not the walk through the dunes, not the dinner on the sand, not the slow turn back along the boulevard."
