Portofino, in pastel light and pine air.

A considered guide to the small Ligurian harbour — Piazzetta mornings under the bell tower, an afternoon between Castello Brown and the turquoise cove of Paraggi, and the long Riviera evening between DaV Mare and Ristorante Puny that Portofino has quietly made its own.

Piazzetta · Castello Brown · Paraggi

A small harbour that keeps its hours in pastel walls and turquoise water.

A Note on the Harbour

Portofino rewards those who keep close to the cypress path.

The harbour is small, vertical, and quietly demanding — the Piazzetta at the heart, the fortress above, Paraggi just along the coast, and the long evening between DaV Mare and Puny that Portofino has quietly kept to itself for generations.

What follows is a short, edited guide — four daytime moments, then two of each for the evening. Enough for a long weekend, or the start of something worth returning for.

VI · A Sketched Itinerary

One day, lightly drawn.

Not a schedule — a suggestion. Move with the light, the cypress path, and the company you keep.

  1. 10:00

    Coffee on the Piazzetta

Start at one of the small café tables on the Piazzetta — an espresso, a slow watch of the small square as Portofino wakes. The day asks for nothing yet.

  2. 12:00

A morning gozzo to San Fruttuoso

Down to the harbour for an hour on a classic wooden gozzo along the cliffs to the hidden abbey of San Fruttuoso — a long swim in the turquoise cove, a slow return along the promontorio.

  3. 16:00

The cypresses to Castello Brown, then Paraggi

Up through the cypresses to the fortress at golden hour — the pastel harbour far below, the Riviera unfolding. Down again, then the slow afternoon at the small turquoise cove of Paraggi.

  4. 18:30

An aperitif at Winterose, or on the Splendido terrace

An hour at Winterose just off the Piazzetta — a negroni in hand, the lamps coming on along the harbour. Or up the hill for the same hour on the celebrated terrace of the Belmond Splendido.

  5. 20:30

    Dinner

DaV Mare for the considered starred evening on the harbour, Ristorante Puny for the long romantic dinner on the Piazzetta. Both deserve the early reservation.

  6. 23:30

    If the night insists

Chuflay for the classical second round above the boats, then — if the night truly insists — Covo di Nord-Est along the coast for the legendary seaside close, or the refined late terrace at Eight Hotel Paraggi. The harbour will keep.

A Closing Thought

"In Portofino the evening is unhurried, the harbour chosen, and the small port is at its best for those who keep close to the cypress path."
