Como, in cypress and lamplight.

A considered guide to the lake — slow Bellagio mornings, long lunches at the water's edge, candlelit villa evenings, and the unhurried Lombard hour that Como has quietly made its own.

A stylish couple in evening attire walking along the Lake Como lakefront promenade at dusk with illuminated villa lights on the water and cypress trees

Cernobbio · Bellagio · Lenno

A lake that wears the evening in lamplight.

A Note on the Lake

Como rewards those who move slowly on the water.

The lake is small enough to know in a long weekend and storied enough to keep returning to. Cernobbio for the morning, Bellagio for the afternoon, the Riva back to the villa as the light turns. The evening writes itself.

What follows is a short, edited guide — four daytime moments, then two of each for the evening. Enough for a long weekend, or the start of something worth returning for.

Lake Como at sunrise with soft pastel light, mist rising over still water, cypress trees and pastel villas on the shoreline, mountains in the distance

By Day

The light here is soft. Stay with it.

By Day · Water & Garden

Before the lights come on.

Four ways to spend the bright hours — village, villa, water, garden. Each quietly worth the day on its own.

Bellagio at first light

Bellagio · The pearl of the lake

The cobbled stepped lanes of Salita Serbelloni at first light — pastel facades, green shutters, the cascade of oleander down the alley walls. Coffee at one of the quieter rooms, a slow walk down to the boat dock. Stay until the morning ferries arrive.

Best for · A slow, lovely hour

Villa del Balbianello

Lenno · A villa on its own peninsula

The eighteenth-century villa on its wooded peninsula at Lavedo — terraced loggias, the cypress avenue, the view back across the lake to Bellagio. Take the boat from Lenno; arrive before the morning groups. The light through the loggia is the one to wait for.

Best for · A long, considered morning

Classic mahogany Riva motorboat cruising on Lake Como with cypress-lined shore and pastel villas in golden afternoon light

An afternoon on the water

By Riva · The lake at its best

Hire a classic mahogany Riva from one of the boat houses at Cernobbio or Bellagio — drift north past Villa d'Este and the cypress shore, a swim off the bow, a bottle in the ice bucket, the captain on the wheel. The lake reveals itself only to those on it.

Best for · A slow, sun-warmed afternoon

Italian formal garden with manicured hedges, cypress avenue, fountain and Lake Como view from a terrace at Villa Carlotta in soft daylight

The lake gardens

Tremezzo · Villa Carlotta & Villa Melzi

Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo and Villa Melzi just outside Bellagio — the great formal gardens of the lake, with their cypress avenues, citrus terraces and rhododendron walks. Late spring is the hour, but any hour rewards the walk.

Best for · A long, slow afternoon

II · Restaurants

Where the evening begins.

Kitchen

Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como · Lakeside fine dining

Il Gatto Nero hillside trattoria above Lake Como with warm rustic Italian dining room, candles, white tablecloths and panoramic lake view at golden hour

Il Gatto Nero

III · Bars

For the hour before, or the hour after.

Terrazza 241 rooftop bar in Como at golden hour with refined cocktails, cushioned lounge seating, panoramic Lake Como view and soft string lights

Terrazza 241

Como · A rooftop above the old town

Harry's Bar Cernobbio classic Italian lakeside cocktail bar interior with warm wood panelling, brass fittings, low lamplight and a beautifully made negroni

Harry's Bar

Cernobbio · A classic, kept honest

On the lakefront in Cernobbio, a few steps from Villa d'Este — warm wood, brass fittings, low lamplight, and a negroni made with the kind of muscle memory that only decades of practice produce. The room for the second round.

Best for · A second, exact round

IV · Beach Clubs

If the day insists on continuing.

Lido di Bellagio Italian lakeside beach club with wooden deck, white parasols, turquoise Lake Como water and refined sun loungers in golden afternoon light

Lido di Bellagio

Bellagio · Beach club by day, dance floor by night

On the western shore of Bellagio — wooden decks and white parasols by day, then a long evening of music on the water as the sun goes down. The venue Lake Como turns to when the night insists on continuing.

Best for · A late, music-filled close

Lido di Lenno lakeside beach club on Lake Como with wooden deck, white sun loungers, parasols and turquoise water at golden hour

Lido di Lenno

Lenno · A quieter shore, a longer afternoon

Across the lake on the Lenno shore — wooden deck, white loungers, the swimming platform that drifts a few metres from shore. Lunch turns into the late afternoon turns into a sundowner. The day finds its own ending.

Best for · A slow, sun-warmed afternoon

V · Hotels

A room worth returning to.

A good hotel does the quiet work — a smile at the door, a Riva already waiting at the jetty, a view that earns its place in the morning. These two do it best on the lake.

The View
Cypress shore at dusk, the lake at first light.
The Detail
A negroni brought down to the jetty, unbidden.
The Hour
Late check-out, granted with a nod.
The Morning
Coffee on the terrace, the boats just waking.

Villa d'Este Cernobbio iconic illuminated facade at dusk with private floating swimming pool on Lake Como, manicured gardens and warm lamp light

Villa d'Este

Cernobbio · The grande dame of the lake

Sixteenth-century villa on twenty-five acres of formal gardens — the floating swimming pool on the lake, the avenue of plane trees down to the water, and a service so practised it has become invisible. The benchmark every other lake hotel measures itself against.

Best for · A grand, theatrical week

Il Sereno

Torno · Modern, still, exact

Patricia Urquiola's modernist intervention on the Torno shore — thirty suites, an infinity pool that finishes in the lake, dark stone and oak that lets the water do the talking. The quiet alternative to the grande dame across the bay.

Best for · A still, modern weekend

VI · A Sketched Itinerary

One day, lightly drawn.

Not a schedule — a suggestion. Move with the light, the water, and the company you keep.

  1. 08:30

    Coffee on the lakefront

Start at the quiet hour on the Cernobbio or Bellagio waterfront — an espresso, a cornetto, the boats waking on the water. The day asks for nothing yet.

  2. 10:30

    Bellagio at the slow hour

The boat to Bellagio before the morning crowds, the stepped lanes of Salita Serbelloni, a second coffee in the square. Stay until the ferries fill up.

  3. 13:00

    Lunch by the water

A lakeside table at Lido di Lenno or one of the quieter terraces around Tremezzo. Stay for the second espresso; the afternoon is in no hurry.

  4. 16:00

    An afternoon on the Riva

A mahogany Riva from the boathouse, a slow loop past Villa del Balbianello and the cypress shore, a swim off the bow. Stay until the light turns the villas gold.

  5. 19:30

    A first drink at sunset

Terrazza 241 above Como for the rooftop, or Harry's in Cernobbio for the negroni. One round, slowly. Let the dining room wait.

  6. 21:00

    Dinner

Kitchen at Mandarin Oriental for the long lakeside tasting, or Il Gatto Nero above Cernobbio for the candlelit hillside evening. Both deserve the early reservation.

A Closing Thought

"On Como the lake does the talking. The evening only asks that you be present for it."
